“A serum” or “a mask” can refer to many formulas with different directions. A category recommendation is not yet a complete product instruction.

Check the exact item and proposed use

When a stylist recommends a care item, record its full name, version and intended job. Ask how it fits the hair supplier’s guidance and whether it is meant for the lengths, the base or another area. This is particularly useful when a brand sells several similarly packaged products.

A hypothetical decision worksheet

FieldWhat to record
RecommendationWrite the full formula name and version, not only serum, mask or conditioner.
PurposeRecord what the provider wants it to do and where it should be used.
ReplacementIf the named product is unavailable, obtain confirmation before treating another formula as equivalent.

A hypothetical recommendation is remembered as “the blue bottle.” That is not enough when a brand uses similar packaging across several items. A label photograph and a short written purpose make the shopping list reproducible. Check the current directions against the recommendation and ask about any difference before use. This protects clarity without claiming that every version is unsuitable.

Before acting

Before purchasing, read the current label back against the recommendation. If the name or formula differs, ask whether the substitute is suitable. Keep a photo of the label with your care record, without assuming that a familiar colour of bottle identifies the same product.
